What is Pilates?
Pilates is a mindful practice that cultivates strength, stability, and resilience from the inside out. Through intentional movement, conscious breath, and focused awareness, we build a strong, supportive core and create balanced strength throughout the entire body. Each movement is performed with precision and control, offering a challenging yet low-impact practice that enhances posture, mobility, and overall well-being.
Developed by Joseph Pilates (1883–1967), the method was born from his belief that true fitness comes from the harmonious integration of body, mind, and breath. Having overcome his own physical challenges, he created a system designed to restore vitality, improve alignment, and support ease in everyday movement. As Joseph Pilates famously said, “Pilates will develop the body uniformly, correct wrong postures, restore physical vitality, invigorate the mind, and elevate the spirit.”
At Yoga Highlands, Ashby brings a somatic approach to the Pilates method, inviting students to cultivate a deeper relationship with their bodies. By learning to notice and respond to both internal sensations and the surrounding environment, clients develop greater body awareness, improved movement patterns, and lasting resilience. This practice is about more than building strength—it is about embodying alignment, moving with intention, and supporting health and longevity for years to come.
